If you're thinking of leasing a premium SUV there are a few options available to you. And once you've discarded those you will be left with the brand new Volkswagen Touareg.

The premium SUV market is a busy one so maintaining the Touareg's place at the top of the pile represents a serious challenge for VW.

We know the Touareg itself isn't new, VW has already built around one million of them, but this is the latest version of the VW flagship SUV model and it's packed full of updates and new technology.

It's also completely new from the ground up and is based on the same platform as the Audi Q7, Porsche Cayenne, and Bentley Bentayga. This is a suitably high-end product.





Compared to the outgoing models the new Touareg is both wider and longer, although not by much. Although in this case “not by much” actually makes quite a difference.

The boot capacity has increased from a respectable 697 litres to a whopping 810 litres and the cabin offers more passenger space for improved comfort. Not that there was any lack of comfort in the old one. Despite the increased size VW has also made the new Touareg lighter - a mixture of aluminium and high-tech steel has shed 106kg from the total - which helps to improve economy and handling.

In order to maintain the premium feel of the Touareg VW has announced that European models will initially be offered with a choice of two diesel engines. Both will be V6 units offering around 230bhp or 280bhp depending on which one you choose.

There are also plans to introduce a 340bhp V6 petrol and a V8 turbodiesel at later dates, as well as the possibility of a 360bhp plug-in hybrid option being added to the list. Regardless of your preferred option there will be plenty of power available to handle most driving conditions, either on or off the beaten track.





The interior sees a new digital cockpit and touchscreen infotainment system combining to form a car that requires hardly any traditional buttons and switches. It's a very clean and uncluttered interior. You can also personalise the new Touareg, adapting the assistance, handling, and comfort functions to specifically suit your personal taste. Rather than adapting yourself to a new car, the Touareg allows you to adapt your new car to yourself.

Alongside the digital interior the new Touareg also offers the most comprehensive range of comfort and driver aids ever integrated into a VW. We're not just talking about parking sensors and collision avoidance systems either. You get all of the safety features you would expect to see in a premium car, but you also get things like thermal imaging Night Vision assistance, active all-wheel steering, camera-based automatic LED lights, electronically controlled roll stabilisation, and a head-up display.





So, the new VW Touareg is bigger, more powerful, more comfortable, better equipped, and superbly built. Looking at a similarly specified model from the current range it's likely that prices will start from somewhere around the £50k mark.
