What you can expect on the new Hyundai Kona Electric - including a 300+ mile range
Hyundai has announced details for its second-generation Kona Electric, following on from the launch of petrol and hybrid versions of the Korean firm's crossover.
The Kona Electric was one of the first mass-market EVs to challenge the range of premium models, and the latest version continues to offer a long driving range.
Up to 319 miles on a charge is available from the compact SUV, when the 65kWh battery is picked, though there will also be a 48kWh battery for a lower cost in early 2024, but with a shorter 223 mile range.
The 48kWh battery powers a 114.67kW electric motor, while the larger pack gets a 160kW motor for a 0-62mph time of 7.8 seconds; the lower powered model adds a second to that time.
Four trim levels for new Kona electric
You can choose from Advance, N Line, N Line S, and Ultimate - with only the Advance offered with the smaller battery pack. Both come with a 10.5kW on-board AC charger, and the new model improves rapid DC charging over the previous version, up from 75kW to 102.3kW. Times are not quoted yet, but expect around half an hour for a significant top up to 80% for the larger battery model.
Standard equipment for the new Kona Electric includes a dual 12.3-inch panoramic screen with over-the-air updates available and a connected car navigation cockpit. Navigation is also fitted as standard, including smartphone connectivity, and USB-C sockets front & rear. 17-inch alloys are fitted to entry-level models, increasing to 19-inch wheels for other trim levels - though Hyundai offers a free reduction in wheel size for those wanting to maximise range. Advance and Ultimate models focus on comfort, while the N Line and N Line S emphasise sportiness.
Climate control, auto dimming rear view mirror, automatic headlights and wipers, smart cruise control, and keyless entry & start are all included from the Advance trim level, while moving up specifications sees the likes of eco suede and leather upholstery, powered tailgate, Bose audio system, full LED headlights, electric front seats, remote park assist, and wireless phone charging, depending on trim.
Leasing orders for the new Hyundai Kona Electric can be placed now; expect delivery by autumn 2023.
