Not too long ago we told you about the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer. Well, that's not the whole story of the new 2 Series. The Active Tourer may be a very good lease option, but what if you don't have any of those noisemakers we call children and don't need the extra space and practicality? What you need is exactly the same car....almost. You need to check out the new BMW 2 Series Coupe.

The new 2 Series Coupe follows the classic BMW formula of rear-wheel drive and a six-cylinder in-line engine option. It's what BMW does, and does very well. It's also got lots of new equipment to underscore its sporting characteristics.

The BMW 2 Series Coupe actually hit the market in March with three model variants initially available. Topping the range is the all-wheel drive BMW M240i xDrive Coupe, which is powered by a 374bhp six-cylinder engine. If you want something a bit less angry and fire-breathing you can also choose from four-cylinder petrol and diesel versions in the standard M Sport specification.

All BMW 2 Series Coupe models feature Steptronic.

It's the eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission. If you needed any further evidence of the sporty nature of this car, as well as gearshift paddles on the steering wheel, this automatic transmission also adds a Launch Control function and a clever Sprint function that shifts into the lowest usable gear when the driver pulls the left-hand shift paddle for at least one second.

A long bonnet, short overhangs and a set-back passenger compartment give the new 2 Series Coupe those classic BMW proportions. The car's swooping roofline and short boot lid with its pronounced spoiler lip, typify sporting BMWs.

There's also a nice mix of old and new. The traditional BMW kidney grille now features vertically arranged air flaps in place of the standard bars. These operate electrically and only open when the engine has an increased need for cooling air, which means they're closed when it doesn't and therefore the car is more aerodynamically efficient. The touch of old comes from the new circular LED headlights inspired by the legendary BMW 02 models.

The interior is as sporty as the exterior.

The BMW Controller, gear selector lever, Start/Stop button, Driving Experience Control switch and numerous other function buttons are all grouped within the centre console for an engaged driving experience. Standard equipment includes a Sport leather steering wheel with newly designed multifunction buttons, heated sport seats for the driver and front passenger.

The standard-fitted BMW Live Cockpit Professional also features a high-resolution 12.3-inch instrument cluster behind the steering wheel and a 10.25-inch control display. Other things you won't need to ask for are acoustic glazing for the windscreen and a rain sensor with automatic headlight activation, three-zone automatic climate control, and LED lighting for the interior.

In all honesty though, you don't really need us to tell you all of this. If you choose a BMW you already know what you're getting, and if you choose a sporty coupe version of a BMW you're getting just a little bit more of it.

Releasing two versions of the latest 2 Series is a good move from BMW. It offers the best of both worlds when you can take the same car and offer different people different things. Underneath, either one is an excellent car with lots of good reasons to choose them.

But let's be completely honest. Even if you need the extra space, your heart is telling you that the one you really want to lease is the brand-new BMW 2 Series Coupe.
