Hyundai reveals reinvented Kona crossover
Hyundai has launched its second generation of the popular Kona, a crossover currently available in a choice of petrol, hybrid, or pure-electric power.
The new Kona sits on the Hyundai Group's latest platform, which is found beneath the recently released Kia Niro line-up.
This has allowed the Kona to expand, with wider and longer dimensions, combatting one of the few criticisms that could be levelled at the outgoing model - lack of rear passenger space and a small load area. So good news for business users.
The new Kona is said to “maximise living space” according to Hyundai, with design changes freeing up interior space.
In terms of design, the new Kona has been inspired by the Hyundai Seven concept SUV, and brings the crossover closer to the bold designs of the likes of the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6.
Clearly similar in proportions to the Kia Niro, the Kona has not had powertrain specifications announced as yet. However, a good bet will see at least the hybrid and pure-electric offering remain, plus the potential for a plug-in hybrid option available in the Niro.
The pure-EV Niro EV has a range of 285 miles, a 201hp electric motor, and rapid charging time of around 40 minutes, so expect the Hyundai Kona Electric to get the same system and a very similar range figure.
The hybrid is anticipated to get a 1.6 litre petrol engine and electric motor, producing a combined 140hp, plus the existing 1.0 petrol powered Kona is expected to continue as the entry level to the range.
The interior gets a dual-screen, single sheet of glass encompassing both driver's digital instruments and infotainment system. This is a further progression in the Kona's interior equipment, which was updated a little over a year ago, but keeps it up to date and in line with the new Ioniq models.
Expected to arrive around the middle of 2023, new Hyundai Kona lease rates and specifications will be announced closer to on-sale date.
