Mazda MX-5 Kizuna Special Edition won't hang around
The principle of a fun little sports car isn't complicated: engineering pared back to the fundamental principle of weight.
A lightweight car doesn't need a hugely powerful engine to be quick. A lightweight car is also more responsive, and a car that accelerates quickly and handles responsively will put a big smile on any driver's face. And the biggest smile will be found on the faces of the 250 lucky people who end up driving the brand-new, limited-edition Mazda MX-5 Kizuna.
After more than three decades of unqualified success it's fair to say that there's a clear choice when it comes to the best sports car on the road. When Mazda came up with the MX-5 it did such a good job pinning down the essence of the sports car that it really couldn't fail. You'll genuinely struggle to find anything that drives as well as the Mazda without costing twice the price.
Over those three decades, special edition MX-5 models have consistently proved popular with those looking for a sports car with unique details, extra equipment, and a little dose of exclusivity. With just 250 examples coming to the UK, the special edition Mazda MX-5 Kizuna follows that tradition of exclusive models.
Based on the 1.5-litre Exclusive-Line Roadster, the MX-5 Kizuna features Deep Crystal Blue or Machine Grey paint and a premium blue fabric hood. Of the 250 coming to the UK, 170 will be in grey and 80 will be blue. The Kizuna also features a Light Stone Nappa leather interior to complement the exterior colour and 16-inch bright alloy wheels. The addition of the Kizuna adds even more choice to the range, at least until all the examples of this limited-edition MX-5 are snapped up.
Luckily, if you're not lucky enough to grab one, Mazda has also tweaked the rest of the MX-5 range for 2023 so there are plenty of other options you can definitely get hold of.
Updated Mazda MX-5 range
The 2023 Mazda MX-5 line-up comes in soft-top roadster and retractable hard-top RF models across three trim levels: Prime-Line, Exclusive-Line, and range-topping Homura. Both the Roadster and RF models come with a choice of 1.5-litre or 2.0-litre Skyactiv-G petrol engines.
If you opt for the Roadster version you can specify the 130bhp, 1.5-litre engine in Prime-Line and Exclusive-Line grade while the 180bhp 2.0-litre is available in Exclusive-Line and range-topping Homura grades.
As with the Roadster, the Prime-Line RF is powered by the 1.5-litre engine, while Exclusive-Line models can be specified with either the 1.5 or 2.0-litre engine. In RF versions the range-topping Homura is only available with the larger 2.0-litre engine, and if you opt for one of the 2.0-litre RFs in either trim you can also choose to replace the manual gearbox with an automatic.
Other updates include the addition of the Zircon Sand paint colour to the MX-5 range for the first time, while Homura models with a manual gearbox will feature red Brembo front brake callipers.
When it comes to driver engagement, the Mazda MX-5 has established itself as the benchmark, and the 2023 models continue to deliver on that recipe for an affordable world-class sports car. On that basis alone, why on earth wouldn't you want to lease yourself a little bit of fun too?
