There's a new edition of the BMW 2 Series Coupe on the way that is guaranteed to attract a lot of interest. Aiming to maintain its sector-leading status, the latest 2 Series Coupe boasts rear-wheel drive, a six-cylinder in-line engine option and new equipment features.

In an ideal world a BMW should be rear-wheel drive, and as the 1 Series isn't, that means this new 2 Series Coupe is the entry point to a “proper” BMW. If you see what we mean. And it has that straight six…

The exterior design of the new BMW 2 Series Coupe doesn't try to hide the car's nature. The low front apron, headlights positioned to the outer edges of the front end and the horizontal BMW kidney grille give the car a wide, low-slung look.

The headlight units were inspired by the classic 02 models , each having an individual circular headlight using full-LED technology for both low beam and high beam. Another new feature is the vertically arranged air flaps that replace some of the bars in the grille. These operate electrically and open when the engine has an increased need for some cool, refreshing air.

A long bonnet, short overhangs and lots of sharp, diagonal lines add to the sporty look of the new 2 Series Coupe. The car's roofline swoops down from the B-pillar and into the short boot lid with its pronounced spoiler lip. The exhaust tailpipes - circular on four-cylinder models and trapezoidal on the range-topping M240i – finish the look.

So what are the engine options on the new BMW 2 Series Coupe?

While we're on the subject of engines. The new 2 Series Coupe will launch at the beginning of 2022 with three model variants initially available.

The turbocharged, four-cylinder 2.0-litre petrol engine in the BMW 220i Coupe makes 184bhp. It also generates 300Nm of torque, enabling acceleration of 0-62mph in 7.5 seconds. Top speed is 147mph and it will return around 45mpg. The 2.0-litre engine in the new BMW 220d Coupe develops 190hp and peak torque of 400Nm. A mild hybrid, 48V starter generator takes the role of an electric drive system, providing an extra 11bhp of power. This electric boost enhances the car's response when accelerating and overtaking. The BMW 220d Coupe sprints to 60mph in 6.9 seconds and boasts a 60mpg return on a tank of fuel.

But the one you really want is the flagship model, the BMW M240i xDrive Coupe.





It's been bolted to the most powerful six-cylinder in-line petrol engine in the regular BMW portfolio. The 374bhp, 3.0-litre engine accelerates from 0 to 62mph in just 4.3 seconds, and on to a limited top speed of 155mph. If you're interested in the engineering details, the engine features an aluminium crankcase with a closed-deck construction and an alloy cylinder head. Internal engine efficiency is increased by weight-optimised pistons and con rods and a forged steel crankshaft.

If you're not interested, you just need to know it's fast and powerful. And also, very well equipped on the inside.

The BMW Controller, gear selector lever, Start/Stop button, Driving Experience Control switch and a few other function buttons are grouped within a modern-looking control panel in the centre console. Standard equipment includes a Sport leather steering wheel with newly designed multifunction buttons.

The standard heated sport seats for the driver and front passengers of M Sport provide both excellent long-distance comfort and pronounced lateral support. Electric M Seats with integrated headrests and M seatbelts feature in the six-cylinder flagship model. There's even an Easy-Entry function that slides the electric front seats forward in a controlled movement when the backrests are folded, making it easier for passengers to access the rear seats.

The interior trim strips on all variants come in High-gloss Black as standard. Standard equipment also includes cushioned knee pads on the centre console, an M headliner in Anthracite, door sill finishers bearing the M logo, M pedals, M floor mats and M-specific displays in the instrument cluster.

The new BMW 2 Series Coupe ticks an awful lot of boxes.
