Next-generation BMW 5 Series launches with all-electric i5
BMW’s ever-popular 5 Series saloon has arrived with a new eighth-generation model - see separate story - and this time it’s complemented by the new i5 EV.
Offered with two powertrain options - eDrive40 and M60 xDrive - the BMW i5 will cover up to 356 miles on a charge in the former specification. Expected to be a fleet favourite, the i5 eDrive40 has a long enough range to take on the likes of Tesla and Mercedes-Benz. For those wanting high-performance, the M60 xDrive will complete the sprint time in 3.8 seconds 0-62mph.
Available in M Sport or M Sport Pro trim - or the range-topping M50 xDrive specification - the i5 features a curved display, now with a new ‘Interaction Bar’, which includes touch sensitive controls for the heating/cooling systems. In-car gaming is fitted for times when the vehicle is stationary, such as charging the car’s battery.
As well as the pure-electric i5, BMW is also offering drivers a 520i mild hybrid, and 530e & 550e plugin hybrids, as part of a more traditional 5 Series powertrain line-up. These plug-in hybrids can cover up to 63 miles on a charge, which give it a BIK rating of 8% for company car drivers.
Longer, wider, and taller than the out-going model, the 5 Series also has a longer wheelbase, to offer rear occupants greater leg space. It’s the first BMW in the UK to offer customers a leather-free interior - Veganza - available as standard from launch.
Although only offered as a saloon to lease at the moment, a 5 Series Touring, which will be available with the same range of powertrains, will go on sale in 2024.
