The votes have all been counted, the champagne corks have popped, and the jury of 93 international journalists from 28 countries that make up the World Car Awards panel has collectively decided the World Car of the Year 2021 is the fully electric Volkswagen ID.4.

To be fair, they've got a point.

Apart from a spacious and comfortable car, the ID.4 has an impressive range of 310 miles from its 77kWh battery. It also benefits from rapid charging compatibility of up to 125 kW, with the ability to add up to 199 miles of range in just 30 minutes. That battery pack combined with the 204bhp electric motor sends the rear-wheel drive ID.4 to 60mph in just over 8 seconds.

The new ID.4 interior is full of clever technology and all touchscreen controlled. There are LED headlights and taillights, tinted rear windows, and a reversing camera. A 30-colour ambient lighting, infotainment display with Discover Pro navigation system and a dynamic LED band the width of the windscreen, which changes its pattern and colour to supplement and support navigation signals, charging status, driver assist technologies or the natural voice control. The ID.4 also offers a range of safety features including Adaptive Cruise Control, Front Assist, and Lane Assist, with parking sensors front and rear.

On top of all of that, it's a Volkswagen and there's no arguing with the fact VW knows how to make very, very good cars.

Ralf Brandstätter, CEO Volkswagen Cars: “We are particularly pleased about our ID.4 being named World Car of the Year. Not only because it is one of the most important car awards in the world - but because the jury also honoured a great idea and a great team. The first ID. model for the key markets of Europe, China and the U.S. carries our electric offensive around the world. A convincing car, a great idea - and the World Car of the Year award? That goes well together for us!”

The ID.4 was ultimately chosen from an initial entry list of 24 vehicles from all over the world, then a short list of three finalists as announced on March 30, 2021. The other finalists for 2021 were the Honda e, and the new Toyota Yaris.

This is the fifth World Car of the Year (WCOTY) win for Volkswagen. Previous WCOTY wins include the VW Polo (2010) and VW UP! (2012), while the Golf is responsible for two titles all on its own (2009 and 2013).

Vehicles eligible for the World Car of the Year award must be produced in volumes of at least 10,000 units per year, must be priced below the luxury-car level in their primary markets, and must be “on-sale” in at least two major markets, on at least two separate continents, between 01 May 2020 and 01 May 2021.

Volkswagen plans to deliver around 150,000 ID.4s worldwide this year so that box is well and truly ticked. If you like the idea of being one of them and leasing yourself the 2021 World Car of the Year, give us a call and we'll fix you up with a lease on your very own Volkswagen ID.4.
