Brand-new BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is on its way
Trying to lease something stylish and sporty without it costing the earth can be quite a daunting task. There are loads of SUVs, crossover SUVs, hatchbacks, and city cars to choose from, but if the thought of driving one fails to get your motor revving what do you do? Simple. You lease yourself a brand-new BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe instead.
BMW has recently unveiled the second generation 2 Series Gran Coupe, and it boasts some quite significant improvements on the old one. And it’s not like there was anything wrong with the old one either.
The new BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe blends sporty performance with refined elegance, enhanced road presence, and even more dynamic performance. It boasts a new look, a new interior, new suspension, new engine options, and cutting-edge technology all around.
The new model is also slightly longer and taller than the outgoing version so it promises to be a bit more practical with space for five people and a generous boot.
According to BMW, the new 2 Series Gran Coupe has “a particularly extrovert appearance”. With its updated front end, that longer silhouette, and a wide and powerful rear that seems to be a fitting description.
The wide BMW radiator grille and a large, black lower air inlet, and vertical side openings give the new 2 Series Gran Coupe an incredibly sporty look. When you view it from the side it gets even better too. It boasts the short overhangs, seeping roofline, and long bonnet necessary for a coupe, and the optional adaptive LED headlights with blue accents add a contemporary touch to the overall looks. Finally, the whole package sits on stylish 18-inch M light alloy wheels with options for a range of 18- and 19-inch wheel upgrades also available.
Top of the range M235 model
Opt for the range-topping M235 version and it becomes even more striking. It may not be a full-blooded M car but that doesn’t stop it looking like one. The M radiator grille with horizontal bars, black exterior mirror caps and quad exhaust tailpipes are a performance giveaway, as are the front apron with large air inlets, model-specific side sills, rear spoiler and striking rear diffuser.
It’s a similarly upgraded story on the inside too.
The newly designed standard sport seats offer a high level of long-distance comfort and the rear seat can be folded down to create some extra boot space should it be necessary. You can also upgrade to the optional M Sports seats upholstered in Veganza/Alcantara with integrated head restraints and illuminated M logo if you so choose.
The new 2 Series Gran Coupe also includes a high level of standard equipment too. The BMW Curved Display provides a modern cockpit design comprising a 10.25-inch Information Display and a 10.7-inch Control Display complete with the latest BMW iDrive software that allows for over-the-air updates. The door trim and centre console are subtly highlighted with the ambient lighting, and the standard 6-speaker audio system even includes a 100W amplifier.
There is also a long list of safety systems and driver aids included in the standard specification as well.
If you dip into the options list you can also include the Technology pack which adds wireless charging, Comfort Access, logo projection from the exterior mirrors, frameless automatically dimming interior mirror and the adaptive LED headlights. The Technology Plus Pack enhances that even further with a head-up display, parking assist function, and BMW Live Cockpit Plus with cloud-based navigation. There is also a panoramic roof option as well as an upgrade to the 12-speaker Harman Kardon hi-fi system.
The improvements aren’t just skin-deep either.
The new BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé is fitted as standard with an advanced 7-speed double clutch Steptronic transmission, enabling faster gear changes. Agility, steering precision, and cornering are enhanced by the increased rigidity of the body structure and chassis, and new shock absorber technology improves ride comfort by reducing rolling movements during dynamic cornering. Both front and rear axles have been revised with new components to improve weight distribution, and BMW’s adaptive M suspension system also comes as standard.
There are changes under that long swooping bonnet to get excited about as well.
The new BMW 220 Gran Coupe’s impressive performance, fuel economy and emission levels come from a 1.5-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine featuring 48-volt mild hybrid technology. Clever tweaks to the engine design, plus the extra power from the hybrid system’s electric motor hiding in the gearbox, results in a total power output of 170bhp, a 0-62mph time of 7.9 seconds, and a top speed of 143mph. At the same time you can also expect to get in excess of 50mpg and benefit from a reasonable road tax bracket thanks to the relatively low of CO2 emissions of around 125g/km.
It’s a slightly different story in the range-topping BMW M235 xDrive Gran Coupe, but not in a bad way.
Its larger 2.0-litre engine has also been tweaked and refined with lots of clever upgrades to the intake pipes, combustion chambers, camshaft control, injection, ignition system and exhaust gas routing. The M TwinPower Turbo technology also includes a power increase for the turbocharging system and charge air cooling as well as dual injection.
That may not mean much to some of you so we’ll translate it into layman’s terms: 300bhp, sub-5 second sprint, and a limited top speed of 155mph. And the xDrive all-wheel drive system ensures all that power goes to the right places for optimal traction and cornering dynamics.
In fact, there’s only one downside to all of the above.
While the stylish new BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé may be available to order right now, unfortunately you’re going to have to wait for the first customer deliveries to begin in March 2025 before you can make the most of your excellent lease choice.
